Cultivating Community”

Welcome to Wollaston Garden Club's Web Site!

Located in Quincy, Massachusetts and founded in 1928 we are currently celebrating our 84th year. We presently have 111 members including men and women gardeners of all ages, abilities and interests, from novice to master gardener.

We are members of the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, Inc (www.gcfm.org) and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. (www.gardenclub.org).

Most of our educational programs and meetings are open to the community. Member’s programs include field trips and workshops in floral design and horticulture. Our civic beautification committee maintains a number of public sites in the city of Quincy, and our conservation committee is actively involved in projects preserving the environment in our city.

We encourage local gardeners interested in joining our club to attend a meeting or two, and read the club By-Laws, membership responsibilities and other pertinent information located in the Members section of this site.

Thinking About Rejuvenating Our Home

Landscapes in January

January is all about planning and pouring over seed and garden catalogs – a time for reflection. Our January meeting topic was designed to inspire us to re-design our home landscapes. Landscape designer, Laura Eisener, explained the concept of “foundation plantings” that has been followed in the past and illustrated how the choice of foundation plantings has changed over the years. Laura suggested that we embrace the foundations and challenging sites of our homes and look toward using slower growing conifers, perennials, and grasses. As for new trends Laura suggested planting in masses, designing pathways to access flower beds, using conifers to create boundaries, and designing fences that are visual barriers, but allow light and air to pass through. Laura recommended the book, “Landscape Rejuvenation – Remodeling the Home Landscape” by Bonnie Lee Appleton, which we have purchased and added to our WGC library.

Ann Carey and her hospitality committee presented a wonderful refreshment table and Jo Costello designed a lovely winter arrangement of burgundy amaryllis, white tulips, white freesia, solidago and winter greens. Mary Cassidy, our Floral Arrangers' Co-Chair, set up an informative display on the pave design technique. [Because of our Ikebana teacher, Joanne Chong Caccavalle’s donation of nine lovely white pots, which we filled with pink, red, and white cyclamen and gloxinia, this meeting’s mid winter raffle was especially fun and exciting. Four African violets and a mini orchid – from past president’s Eleanore Tupper’s plant collection - were made available for adoption by Eleanore’s daughter, Janice. More photos...
